This scholarship fund was established as a component fund of The Morton Community Foundation by the friends and loved ones of Brent Cone.
Brent Cone, 40, of Washington, passed Saturday, August 27, 2022 after a well-fought battle with cancer. Brent was born January 22, 1982 in Peoria to Thomas R. “Randy” and Elaine Hancock Cone. On May 12, 2007, he married Brittney Buskirk in Peoria.
Brent grew up in Morton and graduated from Morton High School. He was active in soccer, show choir, madrigals, All State choirs, and theatre. He was an enthusiast of a wide range of music, attending many concerts. He pursued his passion for music and earned a degree from Union University.
He loved sports, especially the Cardinals and Blackhawks. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church in Peoria and also attended Summit Point Church in East Peoria. Brent was a devoted family man and made strong connections with anyone he met.
In memory of Brent, a scholarship will be given each year to a graduating Morton High School Senior. Selection of the recipient(s) of the scholarship(s) will be based on the following criteria:
- Must be a graduating senior at Morton High School.
- Must be enrolled in and attend a university, college, community college, vocational school, trade school, or technical training program (at least 12 credit hours) during the following academic year.
- Minimum 3.0 grade point average.
- Must have had active involvement in choir or affiliated music programs.
- Must have demonstrated leadership in vocal music programs at MHS.
- Financial need will not be a primary consideration.
- Must include an essay of 500 words or less addressing the following statement:
Attitude and empathy for others is a key trait among the best leaders. Discuss how you have used a positive attitude and kindness to be successful in leading others.
Applications for the scholarship will be available through the Morton High School Counseling Office in March/April of each year.
